The Fundamentals of Dice Probability

When two standard six-sided dice are rolled, there are 36 possible outcomes. Each individual die has six equally likely outcomes, resulting in 6 × 6 = 36 total combinations. The sum of two dice ranges from 2 to 12, but these sums are not equally distributed. A sum of seven has the highest probability of occurring, appearing in 6 out of 36 outcomes (16.67%). Understanding these mathematical foundations helps players recognize which bets have better odds.

In craps, the Come Out Roll determines the initial point. If the shooter rolls 7 or 11, it's a Natural and Pass Line bets win immediately. If the shooter rolls 2, 3, or 12, it's Craps and Pass Line bets lose. Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) becomes the Point, and the game continues until either the Point is rolled again (Pass Line wins) or a 7 is rolled (Pass Line loses).

Betting Odds and House Edge

Different craps bets offer varying odds and house edges. The Pass Line bet, which is the fundamental bet in craps, has a house edge of approximately 1.4%. This means for every $100 wagered, the casino expects to retain $1.40 over time. Don't Pass bets offer similar odds with approximately 1.36% house edge.

The Come and Don't Come bets follow similar probability patterns to Pass and Don't Pass respectively. However, Odds bets, also called Free Odds, are additional bets you can make after establishing a point. These bets have no house edge and pay true odds, making them some of the best bets available in any casino. Taking or laying odds significantly improves your overall expected return when playing craps.

Field bets, while popular, have a higher house edge of around 5.56%. These bets cover multiple numbers (2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12) and pay even money on most numbers, with higher payouts on 2 and 12. However, because 7 (which does not appear in the Field) is the most likely roll, the house maintains a significant advantage on these bets.

Table Etiquette and Responsible Play

Understanding craps goes beyond mathematics; proper table behavior ensures an enjoyable experience for all players. Shooters should handle dice with one hand and throw them so they hit the back wall. Never touch dice with two hands, and always keep bets within designated areas. Respect other players' space and avoid negative commentary about rolls.
